Content for each issue is scheduled as far ahead as a year in advance. Unsolicited contributions are welcome, however email queries are preferred. North Dakota Horizons seeks short, nonfiction articles or essays (1,000 to 1,200 words) and feature articles (1,500 to 2,000 words). Whenever possible, manuscripts should be accompanied with illustration or photographs, either prints or high resolution digital. North Dakota Horizons is a four-color magazine and it strives to be a visual publication. Sketches, maps, artwork or illustrations available and appropriate should be submitted with a manuscript for ideas.
Occasionally, there is room to publish poetry or a single feature photograph. No payment is provided for these; however two complimentary issues of the magazine are provided.
All writing submissions must be sent in digital format – via email, CD or floppy disk – in a word processing program compatible with Microsoft Word. Submissions mailed should include a hard copy along with a digital file. The author’s name, address, telephone number and email address should be clearly marked on all submissions. Identifications for illustrations and photos should be clearly marked and as complete as possible.
North Dakota Horizons reserves the right to edit all submitted material. Proofs cannot be provided to authors or photographers before publication. Writers wishing their material returned should enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope of appropriate size. North Dakota Horizons cannot guarantee against loss or damage to any materials while in its possession, but every effort is made to handle the material carefully. Persons submitting materials are welcome to call the editor to inquire about the status of a submission.
Payment for articles and photography will be negotiated upon acceptance of the materials for publication. The payment for articles averages 20 cents a word, a payment for photography for major layouts ranges from $125 to $300. Photo rates are usually based on a one-time use. Payment will be made approximately one month following the date of publication.
